How Light Bulb Security Cameras Actually Work
A light bulb security camera looks like a gimmick until you understand what problem it solves. Every camera needs three things: constant power, a network connection and a mounting point with a view. Traditional cameras give you two of those and make you solve the third with a drill, an anchor and often an electrician. A bulb camera takes an object that already has permanent power and a commanding view of a room or a doorway — the light socket — and turns it into a camera position.
The socket is the whole trick
An E26 or E27 socket delivers mains power continuously, as long as the switch feeding it is closed. That is why the very first thing installers tell you is to tape the switch on or replace it with an always-on plate. If somebody flips the switch, your camera goes dark — not because it failed, but because you removed its power.
The second advantage is height. Sockets are almost always at ceiling height indoors and above head height outdoors on a porch fixture. That is exactly where you want a camera: above reach, angled down, seeing faces rather than shoes.
Pan, tilt and what 360° really means
Most bulb cameras advertise 360°. What they mean is that a motor rotates the camera head roughly 355° horizontally and tilts it around 90° vertically, so the app can sweep across a full circle. It is not a fisheye lens capturing everything at once, which matters: at any given instant you are recording one direction, roughly 90–110° wide.
In practice this is fine, because you point the camera at the thing you care about — the driveway, the side gate, the crib — and use the pan control only when you want to look around after an alert.
Night vision: white LEDs versus infrared
The LED ring around the lens usually contains two kinds of emitter. Infrared LEDs are invisible to the eye and produce a black-and-white image. White LEDs light the scene like a small floodlight and produce colour footage, at the cost of announcing that a camera is there.
A small photoresistor near the lens decides which mode to use. Colour night mode gives dramatically more useful footage — clothing colour, car colour, skin tone — but you should expect it to attract insects at certain times of year, which is the single most common source of false motion alerts.
Wi-Fi, bandwidth and why 2.4GHz is normal
Nearly every bulb camera uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. That frequency travels through walls and around corners much better than 5GHz, which matters when a camera is sitting in a metal fixture at the far end of a house. The trade-off is bandwidth, so streams are compressed.
If your router broadcasts one merged network name for both bands, pairing can fail repeatedly. The reliable fix is to temporarily split the bands, pair the camera on the 2.4GHz network, then merge again.
Storage: card, cloud or both
A microSD slot gives you local recording with no subscription. Cards wear out — they are being written to continuously — so treat a card as a two-year consumable and buy a high-endurance model rated for video.
Cloud plans add off-site backup, which is the one thing local storage cannot do: if a thief takes the camera, the card goes with it. For most households the honest answer is a card plus a habit of exporting anything important immediately.
Where bulb cameras belong — and where they do not
Excellent: garages, porches under cover, hallways, stairwells, back doors, workshops, rental properties, nurseries, driveways with an existing lamp.
Poor: fully exposed outdoor sockets in heavy weather, positions where you need continuous 24/7 recording, and long-range identification across a large yard. A bulb camera is a deterrent and a witness, not a surveillance system.
What to expect on day one
Budget about ten minutes: one minute to screw the unit in, a few to install the app and pair, and the rest to aim the head and set a motion zone that excludes the road or a tree. Skipping the motion-zone step is why people say these cameras spam them with alerts.
Once tuned, a good bulb camera should produce a handful of alerts a day, all of which you actually want to see. If you are getting dozens, your detection zone is too wide or your sensitivity is too high.
